Patient & Study

Patient name and the main de-identification target; PN separates family and given name with ^

(0010,0010) PatientName

De-identification must also cover Age (0010,1010) and private tags

Primary patient identifier used to link studies across PACS and HIS

(0010,0020) PatientID

Birth date in DA form, often de-identified together with the age

(0010,0030) PatientBirthDate

Sex as CS; allowed values are M, F or O, and an empty value is valid

(0010,0040) PatientSex

Study date in DA; range queries join the start and end date with a hyphen

(0008,0020) StudyDate

The time of day is stored separately in (0008,0030) StudyTime

Accession number that links the study to a RIS order

(0008,0050) AccessionNumber

Free-text study description such as CT head without contrast, useful for searching

(0008,1030) StudyDescription

Series & Image Type

Modality as CS, such as CT, MR, US, CR or DX

(0008,0060) Modality

Image origin and type; multiple values are ordered with backslash separators

(0008,0008) ImageType

Series description, usually containing the pulse sequence and reconstruction

(0008,103E) SeriesDescription

The body part is stored separately in (0018,0015) BodyPartExamined

SOP Class UID that identifies the object type and its allowed processing

(0008,0016) SOPClassUID
Risky

Unique instance identifier; editing it breaks every link to indexes and reports

(0008,0018) SOPInstanceUID

UIDs must stay globally unique, so regenerate them instead of editing them

Study unique identifier, required as the key when retrieving with C-MOVE

(0020,000D) StudyInstanceUID

Series unique identifier shared by every instance of the same series

(0020,000E) SeriesInstanceUID

Pixel Data

Number of rows; together with Columns it defines the pixel matrix size

(0028,0010) Rows

Number of columns; pixel data is stored in row-major order

(0028,0011) Columns

Samples per pixel: 1 for grayscale images and 3 for color images

(0028,0002) SamplesPerPixel

Color space such as MONOCHROME2, RGB or YBR_FULL

(0028,0004) PhotometricInterpretation

Bits allocated per pixel, typically 8 or 16

(0028,0100) BitsAllocated

Effective bits are given by BitsStored (0028,0101) and HighBit (0028,0102)

0 for unsigned and 1 for signed integers; CT images are usually signed

(0028,0103) PixelRepresentation

Windowing & Rescale

Rescale intercept; with the slope it converts stored values into HU

(0028,1052) RescaleIntercept

Rescale slope, which can be present on both CT and MR images

(0028,1053) RescaleSlope

Default window center; multiple values are paired with window widths in order

(0028,1050) WindowCenter

Default window width, paired with window center to define the gray range

(0028,1051) WindowWidth

Geometry & Numbering

Instance number; it reflects acquisition order, not the slice position

(0020,0013) InstanceNumber

Compare slice positions across series with ImagePositionPatient

Patient-space coordinates in mm of the first pixel of the slice

(0020,0032) ImagePositionPatient

Six direction cosines describing the row and column directions

(0020,0037) ImageOrientationPatient

Nominal slice thickness in mm, which may differ from the actual spacing

(0018,0050) SliceThickness

The actual spacing is given by SpacingBetweenSlices (0018,0088)

Equipment & File Meta

Equipment manufacturer, for example SIEMENS or GE MEDICAL SYSTEMS

(0008,0070) Manufacturer

Manufacturer model name, for example SOMATOM Definition

(0008,1090) ManufacturerModelName

Station name that identifies the acquiring workstation

(0008,1010) StationName

Transfer syntax UID that defines implicit or explicit VR and the byte order

(0002,0010) TransferSyntaxUID

Group 0002 is file meta information and is always read as explicit VR little endian

Common VR Rules

Person name; ^ separates family, given, middle names and prefix

VR: PN

Unique identifier with digits and dots only, padded to an even length

VR: UI

DA holds YYYYMMDD dates and TM holds HHMMSS times

VR: DA / TM

Decimal and integer strings; a single DS value is limited to 16 bytes

VR: DS / IS

Code string with uppercase enumerated values such as CT, STUDY or AXIAL

VR: CS

Binary data: OB is byte oriented while OW is read as 16-bit words

VR: OB / OW

Sequence of nested datasets that has to be accessed by hierarchical path

VR: SQ

US is an unsigned 16-bit integer and UL is an unsigned 32-bit integer

VR: US / UL
